How To Make A Leather Journal Cover Yourself by Art Gib
When we think of leather book covers, we most often think of the family bible, or some other book that is meant to last a long time, be read often and have significant ongoing value, both monetarily and personally. If you have ever looked at a book's leather cover and thought how nice it is, you might be interested to know how to make one for yourself, to cover any book of your choice.
With the right tools and a little know-how, leather can be repaired, tooled, shaped and dyed. You don't have to know how to do all these things in order to make a serviceable and attractive cover for your favorite book. Leather journal and book covers don't have to be complicated in order to be useful, and will still add life to your treasured thoughts, or that favorite classic or antique book. Here's what to do.
Make a pattern for the book cover by folding a medium- to heavy-weight piece of paper around the existing cover of the closed book. The heavier the better, so as to mimic the properties of the leather you have chosen. Next, Trim the paper so that 1/4 inch extends beyond both the top and bottom of the book. Also trim the vertical edges of the paper so that 1/4 inch extends beyond both the front and back covers. At this point, you can go shopping for the perfect piece of leather, knowing that the size you are looking for is the same as the paper you have traced.
Measure the length and the width of the front cover of the book. Use a ruler, pencil and scissors to measure and mark out a rectangle that measures 1/2 the width of the cover plus 1/4 inch and the length of the cover plus 1/4 inch. This forms the pattern for the pockets of the cover. Your cover will need these pockets to stay on the book, and will also add stiffness to the cover. Note that the leather should not be too tough or thick, as it could cause some damage to the cover of the book over time, stretching the binding out a bit.
Lay the two pattern pieces onto a piece of 4 to 6-oz. leather. Cut two of the rectangular pieces as well as the larger piece. Use leather adhesive to join the pieces on the rough sides of the leather, using a paint stir stick. Allow the cement to dry the leather together thoroughly, and place your book inside the cover.
And there you have it - a nice leather book cover that is easy to construct, and will serve your book for many years into the future.
