There is a slight tendency to think about skin care as a summer activity. As an example, few would consider venturing out into the summer sun for extended periods without some form of protection or neglecting to replace lost moisture in the evenings rnrnIt's always a surprise therefore to find that some people think that in winter they can afford to ease off and that their skin will look after itself. Apart from some lip balm, all too often skin care is mentally 'packaged away' to be forgotten about until those first glimmers of spring sunshine.rnrnThis is a BIG mistake!rnrnThe same problems that winter causes our lips and which necessitate the use of lip balm, are also hitting and damaging other parts of our exposed skin. rnrnIt can be very cold in winter! This may seem staggeringly obvious especially in some countries. But that cold can have the effect of massively reducing humidity in the air and that in turn will reduce the moisture in our skin. If the conditions are cold enough tiny particles of water in the skin can be frozen causing damage. Cold harsh winds which are most common in winter in some place more than others though this will have the same effect and are extremely damaging to the skin, causing dry cracked skin.rn rnWhen the body is cold it instinctive natural reaction is to withdraw blood from the surface of the skin to try to help keep the major organs warm in an attempt to warm the body. This results in reduced blood circulation to the skin and therefore depleting it of it's essential minerals. With this skin may start to appear lifeless and colourless. This will also result in your reduction of your skins natural defences.rnrnOne thing many try to do in winter is keep warm. This means that at home the rooms will usually be heated and therefore both hot and dry and can have a drying effect on our skin that can cause damage. Our skin also has to cope with being subjected to large temperature changes whenever we go to and from our heated homes or offices to the cold conditions outside. Although we have skin that is very flexible and able to cope with changes, it is doubtful if our natural evolution took account of wintertime central heating!rnrnAlso don't forget that winter does not mean no sun. The sun's rays can still be damaging through out the winter especially around snow when the bright white reflects the UV rays which can easily burn your skin. It is estimated that 90% of the skins damages are caused by the sun and a lot of people are unaware that this also occurs through out the winter.rnrnDuring wintertime if you’re happy to live with pale and lifeless skin, a 'ruddy complexion' and perhaps cracks and chaps, then there is no need to read on! rnrnIf you think though that these things are undesirable, there are a few basic steps that should help protect skin against such risks.rnrnMoisturising is the keyrnThe dangers of loosing moisture in winter have been made clear above, so inevitably moisturising is critically important.rnrnMoisturise frequently in winter and don't try and economise on time, effort or money in this area. Do it regularly and do it properly to avoid damaged skin. Try to use natural products that have high oil and mineral content, as lighter moisturisers with volatile synthetic compounds may not offer a sufficient barrier against those freezing and drying winds. rnOne of the commonest mistakes made, usually because of busy schedules, is to apply moisturisers then rush directly out into the cold. Most moisturisers need some time to become absorbed by the skin. Going out immediately into cold temperatures with a thick layer of moisturiser left on the skin’s surface can just result in micro-globules of frozen moisturiser forming on and inside the skins pores which is not a good idea not a good idea. Give your treatment 15 minutes or so minutes at least allow it to soak in and if you are in a rush wipe off any excess moisturiser before heading out into the cold.rnrnFacial Sprays are an excellent option if you don’t want to use a heavier moisturiser because you’re going to be inside for the most part, choose a natural product based moisturising spray. These are lighter but will protect the skin and avoid that drying out sensation commonly experienced in centrally heated homes and offices. rnrnrnrnGo easy with cleansing.rnCleansing is fine but remember that skin is under extreme pressure in winter and could do without being frequently hit with strong cleansers as well. Alcohol based products and those with strong synthetic compounds should be avoided or used only sparingly. It's better to use gentle natural cleansers and even then, perhaps less frequently than at other times of the year.rnTry to also find a natural product cleanser that is right for you and not unnecessarily 'drying' on the skin.rnrnrnAllow for the 'Hot House'rnMany modern homes are heated to high temperatures and modern insulation can lead to houses being draft free. While this may be good in terms of economy, draft-free houses also mean limited fresh air circulation and this can lead to low humidity and very drying conditions in winter. rnTherefore remember that even if you don’t plan to go out, moisturising is still essential.rnrnTo sum up, winter can be a time for us to psychologically â€bring down the shutters’ as we concentrate on just getting through to spring. Although that’s perfectly understandable, if you neglect your skin over those dark months; then the price will be paid in spring. Winter temperatures can be just as extreme and just as damaging as sun burn, there are a lot of toxins thorough out the atmosphere and you skin can be at it's most sensitive. rnrnWhen those evenings finally start to lengthen again and the spring clothes are getting prepared in anticipation, that’s certainly not the time you’ll want to start getting unpleasant shocks when 3-4 months of neglect looks back at you from the mirror! rnrnIf these tips are followed then the risks of cold weather skin damage, and its associated appearance problems, can be minimised.
